5 things I learned going makeup free

Photo from the Free People blog

I've never been one who needed a full face of makeup to leave the house but I would always throw on the bare minimum to make sure I looked more alive and awake. I decided to give my face a break recently and went makeup free for a couple of weeks.

1. Makeup routines take time I don't think I realized the full extent of the time spent putting makeup on in the morning. Even a quick, 5 minute makeup routine adds up to over half an hour a week. Considering how often its not a quick 5 minute routine there are more than a few days I was able to hit snooze on my alarm a few more times before finally rolling out of bed. I loved being able to streamline my morning routine and get out the door in much less time.

2. You still need to wash your face I found myself feeling more lazy about washing my face before bed since I wasn't wearing makeup. Turns out that was a bad idea. My skin was rather well behaved lately and I noticed spots popping up everywhere. Every day our faces get caked in dirt, toxins, and bacteria from the air around us so even if you aren't wearing makeup it is still important to wash your face before bed. Skin care is more important than makeup. Having a healthy base to start with before applying makeup is much more important than your ability to cover up trouble skin.

3. Nobody cares about your dark circles No matter what I do I have the worst dark circles and always went to town with concealer to try to cover them up. Turns out, I'm the only one who cares about them. People weren't staring at my dark circles, they weren't whispering about the girl with no concealer on her undereyes. The only person who cared that they were there was me. I wish I could say I grew to not be bothered by them in this time but the truth is I couldn't wait to pick up that concealer once my break was over.

4. It's hard to kick the habit For many of us, once you start wearing makeup it almost becomes a necessity. We reach for concealer to cover a spot, blush and bronzer for a flush of color, and run some mascara through our lashes. Even after a couple of weeks I found myself reaching for it almost out of instinct and couldn't wait for it to be over.

5. You're still the same, beautiful you without it  Wearing makeup as a form of self-expression is really what it should be about, but for many of us it comes from a place of insecurity. There were times where I just really missed my favorite blush or lipstick and there were other times when I felt like I needed to cover up my various imperfections on my face and that I felt a bit self conscious going out without it. These two weeks made me realize that insecurity was a bit more of a motivation for some makeup than I originally thought it was. It's important to evaluate what your reason for wearing makeup is rooted in and to remember that its not meant to hide behind. Try to turn it into a place of fun and expression and remember that it is not a NEED and you truly are the same person and beautiful without it. You aren't less without makeup. Throughout these two weeks nobody really noticed that I wasn't wearing makeup, I was the same Meg to them that they saw every day.

Stila Convertible Color in Camellia

I have had my eye on this for a while and with my recent love of cream blush I finally broke down and bought it at Sephora during their 4x points week for $25.

This line of products from Stila is made to be a flush of creamy color for cheeks or lips. They are highly pigmented so a little goes a VERY long way. Camellia is a neutral brown that pulls a bit pink on my skin but I love the color. I dab a very little bit on my cheek bones with my finger and then blend it out using my real techniques stippling brush for subtle, no fuss pop of creamy, natural, dewy color on my cheeks. I don't like the color as much on my lips but I will sometimes dab on a little bit for a nice nude, natural lip. Conveniently, the packaging is the same color as the blush so once I buy a few more I can clearly see which color it is without having to look at all of them.

I highly recommend this range of blush and will be picking up more colors.

Violeta by Mango Autumn '14

The catalog for the Autumn 2014 collection from Violeta by Mango it is MUCH better than the summer collection. Featuring pieces to perfectly blend sporty and casual with feminine edgy. It's chic, elegant, and everything you could want in a "curve" collection (US sizes 10-18).

I'm really excited about this collection and I can't wait to get my hands on a few pieces. I will be saving up to snag some once they are released.

Well done, Mango. A great collection of flattering and fashionable items for a curve line.

What are your thoughts on this line? Which one of my favorite looks are you loving?

Salt Detox Lavender Bath

I was sent some of this Lavender bath salt from Salt Detox to try! This bath is full of all natural ingredients meant to help detox the body while replenishing nutrients. The ginger in the mixture helps your body heat up to further sweat out and release the toxins and while the bath cools and your relax to the wonderful sent your skin absorbs the minerals in the salt and you are left with healthy, glowing skin.

I put two handfuls of this mix into running bath water that was a hot as I could find comfortable and filled it so that most of my body would be submerged. The soothing smell of lavender was relaxing while I popped in a movie to watch while in the bath. There are no artificial scents or dyes so I had no problem with irritation. I did get a bit light headed but that is part of the detox process so be sure to be careful as you get out of the bath and then relax in bed with some glasses of ice water.

I love this product and will be ordering myself their full range including a bath with coconut milk and a dead sea salt bath. Their ingredients are all natural but boast of a range of benefits including detoxifying, moisturizing, reducing inflammation, and aiding in problems like acne, cellulite, and eczema. Definitely check out their range and order some for yourself! They are based in australia and you can check them out at their website or on instagram (@saltdetox).

Will you be trying out one of their amazing baths for yourself? I'll be hopping in the bath right after I hit post.

The Body Shop Coconut Beautifying Oil

I'm a fan of oils when it comes to everything from skin care, hair, and even makeup removing. While picking up the coconut body wash from The Body Shop I decided to grab this as well. It claims to be an versatile oil for hair, body, and face.

I love the coconut scent that The Body Shop has, it smells like a REAL coconut, not the synthetic-almost-sunscreen-coconut smell that a lot of products have. I love using it after I get out of the shower when my skin is still damp (not wet). It gives my skin that gorgeous summer, dewy glow while keeping it soft all day long. The coconut scent isn't overwhelming and compliments much of my summer perfumes nicely.

I tried it in my hair by just running it through my dry ends. It is great in a pinch and does leave my hair looking and feeling softer and more healthy. I have gone back to my usual hair products but if you are looking for a multi use product for hair and body this is a great one to try!

You can pick this up for yourself at The Body Shop for $14 but they often have great buy 2 get 1 or similar deals going on and I think it is on sale for around $9 right now.

Have you made the switch to beautifying oils?

Life Lately

Just popping in for a quick update before I get back to your regularly scheduled blogging. I've been a total slack and a half lately as I have started a new job and needed a bit of time to adjust to the hours and schedule. I've realized that I'm not going to simply find the time to blog but I am going to MAKE the time. I will turning my sit in the bath and do nothing but binge on Netflix time into a place where I can also blog to get two things done at once- pampering and productivity. This hopefully explains the quality of the picture. I only use my iphone for pictures but once you combine that with the poor light in my bedroom at 5 in the morning it doesn't lead to the greatest pictures.

Music
I haven't made any notable discoveries in the music department lately which is pretty strange but I am at work for most of the day and I just spend time with my family and catch up on shows when I am home. Manchester Orchestra released their first 3 albums repressed on vinyl so I ordered those with my first pay to finish off my collection- now to just wait for Andy to get Right Away, Great Captain! albums repressed and I will be set (rumor is this has a chance of happening). Last weekend I saw Black Flag which was sick. There is only one remaining original member so it was almost like seeing a cover band but I will give credit where it's due- I loved every Henry Rollins-less minute of it.

Movies and Television
My summer shows have returned so I have been enjoying Covert Affairs on a weekly basis. My latest Netflix binge has been The Tudors which I am really enjoying and I just started season 3 this morning. I haven't watched many movies lately since I simply haven't had the time outside of throwing one on and then falling asleep but I did watch My Girl with my mom the other night when I saw that it was on Netflix instant. My mom hasn't seen the whole movie through so I put it on and we were both crying on the couch by the end. I have seen it enough times you would think I know what to expect but I don't think you ever get over it.

Food
Sadly, I have been so busy that I have not been able to try any new recipes but I cannot get enough of an easy, quinoa salad. I just cook a big batch of quinoa and cut up cherry tomatoes, cucumber, and olives. Sometimes I will cook some spinach in coconut oil and a bit of lemon juice until it just starts to wilt. Once the quinoa is cooked and cooled I add the chopped up veggies and the spinach. I make a dressing of lemon juice, vinegar, olive oil, basil, and a touch of honey that I pour over and mix through. I then let it sit in the fridge until it is cold before serving. I don't have dairy often but if you are add some feta or mozzarella cheese. You can also use a dressing of oil, balsamic vinegar, and a bit of honey.
